Writing And Blogging For Your Business

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Do yourself a favor. If you rely solely on your listings in the search engines to generate business, stop right now. Why? Because putting all your marketing dollars into a channel you can’t hope to control, is a fool’s game at best.

Just ask the myriad of businesses ? large, small and medium - that woke up last week to discover their sites had suffered a substantial drop (or had disappeared altogether) in Google’s page results. You can almost hear their shrieks of protest, and their howls of “WHY ME!”

Of course, this happens every time Google makes a change to its algorithm. And each time it makes me wonder why some people (and I’m including serious marketing people with big budgets here) just never learn this basic truth: you cannot produce results if you live solely in a search engine’s virtual vacuum.

Google and other search engines should never be relied upon to generate consistent traffic to your website. They should never be relied upon to generate sales. If you want your business to succeed in the long term, you need to invest in a solid, strategic, well-rounded marketing strategy.

Unfortunately, there are too many businesses out there that are indifferent to marketing in other channels, let alone know how to use online and offline channels to create a competitive advantage.

So, as a reminder to everyone who thinks they can put all their marketing eggs in one basket and still succeed, here are some fundamentals:

Product:

Are you sure your product is the best it can be? Is it better than your competitors? Does it provide something valuable to your potential customers? If you can’t answer “yes’ to these three questions and clarify your answer, you need to go back to the drawing board and set some objectives.

Price:

Whether it’s a good thing or bad, the Internet means that customers can shop around for the best deal from the comfort of their armchair. As a business owner, you can complain and moan, but it won’t help you sell any more products. Make sure you offer the best deal and that your price is competitive, but don’t get caught up in price alone ? there are other ways to convince consumers to buy from you.

Place:

Go ahead and put a billboard up in the middle of the Nevada desert. Use it to announce your latest product launch. Then sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet. That’s what you’re doing if you expect your website (and the search engines) to generate sales for you. A better way is to identify other marketing channels to promote your products.

Promotion:

What’s your offer? Why should consumers buy from you? If you know your customers and know your product, you’ll already have the answers. Look at using incentives that appeal to your target audience and complement your product. Consider direct mail, print, media and public relations and make sure you spend enough to deliver impact. The money you spend on promotion whether online of offline is an investment in the long-term success of your company.

Of course, following the above guidelines does not guarantee success, but they should at least encourage you think about and diversify your marketing efforts instead of relying on the whims of a search engine.

Backlinks And SEO

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Often called off page links, backlinks are the oxygen of search engine positioning and traffic generation.

Backlinks have three key elements, the source from which the backlinks come from, the anchor text of the backlinks and what’s on the page to which the backlinks sends the visitor to.

The amount of backlinks

The amount of Backlinks to a page is one of the factors the search engines consider when deciding where to position the page in the SERPS (Search Engine Page Results).

The origin of the backlinks

The pages from which backlinks originate pass ‘authority’ and visitors to the page to which the backlinks point.|Backlinks are like votes - the higher the volume of votes (backlinks) the more authoritative the page is considered by the search engine.

But ‘votes’ passed via backlinks from trusted or authoritative pages to a page have greater influence over the search engines consideration of this page than backlinks originating from pages with less ‘trust’ or authority.Great examples of trusted sources of backlinks carrying higher authority are pages in education (.edu) and government (.gov) web sites.

Google Page Rank

a ‘reward’ given by Google to a page that it considers over a period to have attracted, sustained and continued to accumulate relevant backlinks) pass some of their page rank via the backlink to the target page.

The ‘anchor text’

Just like a label, the backlink anchor text has influence over the search engines classification of the backlink. If the content of the page is about ‘parenting’ and the backlink on the page is labeled or given the ‘anchor’ text ‘parenting’ then the search engines consider this to be more valuable to the searcher looking for sites related to ‘parenting’ than if the backlink was labeled ‘babycare’.

Common The majority people mess up their backlinks strategies because they fixate on quantity as opposed to quality of backlinks. For instance if the majority of your backlinks to your ‘parenting’ page come from pages not related to ‘parenting’ then whilst you have backlinks they will almost always bring you the wrong traffic.

How to create backlinks

So here is my no obligation guidance for getting backlinks to your pages, great positions in the search engine results pages and quality traffic to your web pages:

1. Initially you should focus on selecting the correct keywords|Choosing the right keywords from the start is critical.
2. I like to create a keyword ‘cloud’.
3. I most often start with a single ‘top’ level keyword or key phrase which has significant visitor traffic.
4. To discover how much visitor traffic is being coming from searches for my primary keyword I use the Google keyword analyzer tool.
5. I look at words and search phrases related to my primary phrase and create my ‘cloud’.
6. I then put together content in the form of articles and videos in which I have embedded backlinks with the correct ‘anchor text’ to my ‘money’ or ‘target’ page and send these to the various directories.
7. When I write my content I do so with the visitor in mind so as each piece of content attracts backlinks to itself as well as sends backlinks to my target pages.

For realistic info in the sphere of web traffic - make sure to go through this site. The times have come when proper information is really only one click of your mouse, use this opportunity.

How To Make Money On Line

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

There are almost as many ways to make money online as there are websites trying to sell you something online……Millions in fact!

The great thing though, is that it all boils down to a few common factors.

No matter if you are starting web traffic or you have the Best Home Business or you have a website promoting %LINK% you will be facing the same challenges.

If your product or service is unique or niche then you will not have any, or too much, competition but if your product is not unique or niche, then you will need to have a reason why anyone should buy from you rather than someone else also offering the same product.

A website with a high ranking in the search engines is without doubt the most cost effective way to sell your product or service.

Only one small problem here……….if you look at how many websites are offering the same or similar product to the one you intend to market it will usually run to many thousands ? if not millions, of websites.

Now before you throw your hands in the air and decide to go and do something else, it is worth pointing out that you can get your website high up in the free searches. It won?t be an instant process but if you are methodical and consistent you can do it yourself ? or if you have the money, you can arrange for a SEO specialist to do the work for you.

Make sure that you study the websites of your competitors to see what they do and say.
Also ensure that you have a capture box to collect the name and email address of your potential customers. You will want to build a customer list, and this is usually best achieved by using email marketing software. Most website owners use a professional company for this rather than trying to manage a growing list by themselves.

Building links to your website is another important factor in gaining higher web ranking.

NEVER be tempted to buy one way links! It could get your website de-listed by many of the major search engines including google.

Social bookmarking is also highly regarded by the search engines, so make a point of joining as many social bookmarking sites as you can, such as dig.com, StumbleUpon.com, Reddit.com etc., and make regular bookmarks of your articles and any of your web pages that contain information of interest.

How To Get A Good Rank On Google - Tips You Want To Know

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

For most website owners, few things are more important than getting a good rank on Google. Why? It?s simply the best way to get new visitors?and customers?to your site. If you?re buried on page 40, you aren?t as likely to get the traffic you want.

So the first thing that you want to do to see that you get a good page ranking on Google is to be sure your site is set up correctly. This involves setting up your pages with the correct meta tag and such so that the web crawlers and spiders can find you!

Another important aspect of getting a good rank on Google is to link your site to other high-profile sites. The spiders like sites that are well connected, but you don?t want to link to just any sites out there. You want to choose sites that are related in some way to your business or service and are sites that are also highly ranked on Google.

The number of pages your site has is also another important part of getting a good Google ranking. Opinions vary as to just what constitutes an appropriate number of pages to attract the spiders, but it?s safe to say that the more pages you have, the more opportunities there are for you to be found. So start with twenty or so and add to them as you can.

You will also want to submit your website to the Open Directory Project. Google tends to favor websites that are listed here. Make sure to have your most important keywords in both the description and title. It?s generally considered best to submit your index page, then others if you can. Don?t fall prey to the desire to over submit your website information, as you can be penalized for this.

Finally, and perhaps most important, remember that content rules when it comes to both Google ranking and returning visitors. You want your website content to be informative and keyword enriched.

Using keywords in your content often is another way to increase the chances that the web spiders find you. You want to be sure to at least have your keyword in the title and first sentence. After that, you want to see that the main keyword, along with similar variations are included in the text.

Be careful, though, not to go too heavy on the keywords. Google can penalize you for this as well. Plus, keyword stuffed content often doesn?t make good reading for your visitors and can turn them off completely. You want your content to be both reader and spider friendly.

To make sure you have your web pages optimized, you will want to read as much as you can about the use of keywords. If you?re not a writer or the keyword density rules give you a headache, you can hire a freelance writer to do the writing for you.

Elance, Guru and Rent-a-coder are good sites to find writers who routinely do keyword article writing and for good rates. Leaving the writing to someone else gives you time to do what you want to do?concentrate on run.

How To Beat The Google Sandbox And Make Some Cash At The Same Time

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

I stumbled across this quite by accident. I knew it was there because I’d seen it before but I forgot about it until today.

So I did some checking to see if it still does work and based on my limited test it appears that it does.

What I’m about to explain to you may not only help get sandboxed sites indexed and ranking quicker, it can even make the site owner a little money.

I’ve been blogging for a few years now. I started it as a hobby and the blog I had was actually a blog before there were blogs. In other words I was ?blogging? with a regular website.

Then a friend turned me on to Movable Type. It is a software which allows me to automate the publishing of content on my website.

I was having problems getting my website/blog indexed by Google back then ? this was about 3 years ago.

It was also around this time that I heard of a new program called Google Adsense (https://www.google.com/adsense) in which one could place code on their web pages that would display ads, and the website owner would earn money on every click.

I thought ?what a cool idea? so I immediately applied for an account. 48 hours later I was placing ads on my blog.

Shortly after this while reviewing my server logs I noticed that I was getting Google referrals! That’s right, within days of placing the ads on my site, it had been fully indexed by Google and it was actually ranking quite highly for terms related to the content I was posting.

I couldn’t believe my luck. Here I thought all I was going to do was make a little money on the side yet I found that the Adsense may have actually helped get my site indexed.

Remember, this was before the Sandbox, but it was a time when link popularity ruled the web. But since it was only a hobby I wasn’t worried about building links. Because I already had a few loyal readers, I wasn’t trying to position this site.

Flash forward to December 2005 and a friend asks me to help him set up his own blog. Actually he wants two of them ? each with their own topics, and both very different in nature.

I consult with him and on February 1, 2006 we register two new domains for him.

He proceeds to build out his blogs and as he’s doing this I suggest placing ads on them. At the time I wasn’t thinking that it would help with indexing, just another way to increase exposure of the ads to generate more revenue for me and him.

We agree to split the money and he places the ads on the two new sites.

I didn’t think much of it until his visitor traffic started going up. He also placed Google Analytics code on the sites and gave me access to them so I could take a look to see where all this traffic is coming from.

Turns out, he’s getting a few Google organic referrals.

Imagine that ? two brand new sites, with no incoming links, but somehow they have managed to sneak out of the Google Sandbox in 3 weeks?

Imagine my surprise, considering I have another site that I started over a year ago, and have been dutifully building content and links, yet I can’t get it out of the sandbox. In fact, the current Google cache is of pages that no longer exist, and haven’t for months.

My explanation, however ?out there? it seems to be is that somehow the Google Ads have allowed the site to bypass the sandbox and move into the index almost immediately.

The first Google organic referral came last week, just two short weeks after the site was tagged with the Google Adsense code. Since then, both sites have received a handful of Google organic referrals.

Based on this very small and somewhat limited test case, my gut is telling me that one way out of the sandbox and into the SERPs is to apply for and install Google AdSense onto your site.

At the very least you’ll make some money ? maybe not a lot, just a few dollars a month (Google only pays out in $100 increments mind you, so it may take a while to get that first Google check) and the best case is that you’ll bypass the sandbox, get indexed quickly and even start driving organic referrals to your site.

Like I said, this isn’t anything near a scientific study but it seems pretty clear to me that what has helped these two sites become indexed so quickly are the ads.

So if you’re stuck in the sandbox, perhaps applying for AdSense is a good idea.

I know I’m going to be placing ads on my other site to see what effect (if any it has). My guess is that within a few days it too will start ranking.
