Writing And Blogging For Your Business

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Do yourself a favor. If you rely solely on your listings in the search engines to generate business, stop right now. Why? Because putting all your marketing dollars into a channel you can’t hope to control, is a fool’s game at best.

Just ask the myriad of businesses ? large, small and medium - that woke up last week to discover their sites had suffered a substantial drop (or had disappeared altogether) in Google’s page results. You can almost hear their shrieks of protest, and their howls of “WHY ME!”

Of course, this happens every time Google makes a change to its algorithm. And each time it makes me wonder why some people (and I’m including serious marketing people with big budgets here) just never learn this basic truth: you cannot produce results if you live solely in a search engine’s virtual vacuum.

Google and other search engines should never be relied upon to generate consistent traffic to your website. They should never be relied upon to generate sales. If you want your business to succeed in the long term, you need to invest in a solid, strategic, well-rounded marketing strategy.

Unfortunately, there are too many businesses out there that are indifferent to marketing in other channels, let alone know how to use online and offline channels to create a competitive advantage.

So, as a reminder to everyone who thinks they can put all their marketing eggs in one basket and still succeed, here are some fundamentals:

Product:

Are you sure your product is the best it can be? Is it better than your competitors? Does it provide something valuable to your potential customers? If you can’t answer “yes’ to these three questions and clarify your answer, you need to go back to the drawing board and set some objectives.

Price:

Whether it’s a good thing or bad, the Internet means that customers can shop around for the best deal from the comfort of their armchair. As a business owner, you can complain and moan, but it won’t help you sell any more products. Make sure you offer the best deal and that your price is competitive, but don’t get caught up in price alone ? there are other ways to convince consumers to buy from you.

Place:

Go ahead and put a billboard up in the middle of the Nevada desert. Use it to announce your latest product launch. Then sit back and enjoy the peace and quiet. That’s what you’re doing if you expect your website (and the search engines) to generate sales for you. A better way is to identify other marketing channels to promote your products.

Promotion:

What’s your offer? Why should consumers buy from you? If you know your customers and know your product, you’ll already have the answers. Look at using incentives that appeal to your target audience and complement your product. Consider direct mail, print, media and public relations and make sure you spend enough to deliver impact. The money you spend on promotion whether online of offline is an investment in the long-term success of your company.

Of course, following the above guidelines does not guarantee success, but they should at least encourage you think about and diversify your marketing efforts instead of relying on the whims of a search engine.

Work From Home: Providing You With That Extra Cash You Need

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

After graduating from college and being an independent person, you may find it hard to budget all your needs in your daily life. In fact, many single hard working Americans today says that with today’s economy, just making ends meet is a very hard thing to do.
Even if you have a good take home salary from your company, you still need to think about your expenses to live a comfortable life, such as paying for your rent, paying for groceries, and paying for you utility bills, such as electric bills, gas bills, and water bills and also your credit card bills.

If you are one of these people who are having a hard time making ends meet with your take home salary, then you need to find another way to make that extra cash in order for you to live life comfortably and free yourself from financial burden. One of the best ways to do so is by working from home.

You may not know it but the internet is more than just emails and entertainment. More and more people are now realizing the internet is a business that they can take advantage of in order to make some money. By doing business in the internet, you will see that it is very easy to find jobs that will require you to work from home. With just a desktop computer with and active internet connection, you will be well on your way in making lots of money.

First of all, you have to consider that the internet is one big market place that businesspersons are taking advantage of in order to get their businesses on top of their competitors.

To start working from home by using the internet, you first need to find a job that doesn?t require you to visit an office and just one that will require you to work at home. To do this, all you have to do is find it through classifieds or you can do so with the help of your favorite search engine.

You need to look for a job in the internet that suits your needs and one that you will enjoy. Usually, web marketing is one of the biggest things in the internet. If you have a talent as a writer, you will be able to take advantage of this skill by writing articles for a company and posting it on the internet. Be sure that you are knowledgeable in the field you choose in order to write good articles with contents that people will surely buy.

For example, if you have a bit of knowledge about automotives, then you can apply as a web content writer for an automotive company. The company will be the one to provide you with instructions on what to write. You will also be required to include a link for their website in order for the readers to easily find their way to your company’s website.

If you are more knowledgeable in computer program and web design, you can start a home based business by building websites, designing graphics and even designing logos for a company.

Another kind of work from home opportunity is medical transcription. This particular field is getting more and more in demand as doctors don?t have the time to handle the reports of all their businesses. You can offer your services by being a medical transcriptionist and do the reports for them.

So if you have enough time, and you are in need of extra cash, then working from home is your best bet.

Going Beyond Search

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Search, Search, Search, that’s all that people are talking about today. Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are competing with each other to try to be the number one search engine. Why? Because the number one search engine gets huge amounts of traffic and traffic equals revenue. Whether it is from ads or from services they can market, search engines stand much to gain from ‘being number one’.

But do the search engines as they stand today fit the demands and requirements of the next generation of internet users?

As the internet grows and the amount of information on it becomes so immense that for every simple search you get thousands of results, the efficiency of the search engine goes down. The search algorithms spend most of their time and computational resources trying to eliminate spam. As a result they can barely keep up with the load of information, let alone sort it in an efficient and intelligent way. So what happens to us, the end user, is that we don’t get what we are really looking for. Now it takes longer to search through the search results than it takes to actually read the information being searched for.

Search engines must migrate to more intelligent ways of sorting data and handling search queries in order to keep up with the new generation of internet users, who are already finding alternatives to search because of lack of satisfaction. Blog communities, forums and other alternatives to search engines are becoming more and more popular these days, mainly because the search engines aren’t as good as they should be and it is hard to find information searching on them.

An understanding of the information written on the web page and the query typed into the search box would help the search engines better themselves in every aspect of the process. The understanding of the information on the web page will enable the search algorithm to sort the page appropriately. Understanding the query can help the search engine supply more accurate results to the user being that the search engine knows what the user is looking for, not only the words the user entered in the query. An added bonus the search engine would get from understanding the query is that the ad engine can put more relevant ads on the page and hence greatly increase the advertising revenue.

Even some of the most basic elements of understanding are lacking in today’s search algorithms. None of the search engines on the web today can resolve even the most basic ambiguity or understand other basic language elements like negation (not, besides, without etc..). Breaking the sentence down to its basic meaning would allow the algorithm to handle negation, and even more difficult tasks such as understanding a question placed in the search box.

For example, if a user searches for this: “I really need a cheap car that gives good gas mileage” an intelligent, understanding robot would be able to understand that the user is not looking for the words that describe the query, and only search for “cheap car, good gas mileage” and omit the words “I really need a” and “that gives” from the search query. Not only that, if the search engine is intelligent and has a knowledge base behind it, it will be able to know which cars are cheap and give good gas mileage and return those results, not limiting the results to the pages containing the words “cheap car, good gas mileage”.

Most of the technologies needed to enable the above mentioned features have been around for a long time, but have not come to good use due to the lack of a strong syntactic engine. Linguistic Agents Ltd (LA), in Jerusalem Israel has developed such an engine that can enable all of these features plus many more. The technologies LA has created break the sentence down into a basic predicate/argument structure allowing the computer to extract the meaning of the sentence from the resulting output. These technologies use the latest advancements in theoretical linguistics and breaks the sentence down to its basic meaning almost in the same way that the brain breaks down the meaning of a sentence. This advanced level of understanding allows for extremely intelligent computation including, but not limited to, the intelligent search examples listed above.

Imagine a new age of computation where computers understand what they are told. All of this is made possible by LA’s advanced algorithms. Not only are these algorithms extremely advanced, they are also very light weight. The entire Intelligence Engine is so small it can be imbedded in client side Flash movies or even in AJAX applications. This would allow the search engines to parse the query and extract the core meaning and only then transmit the query to the server, saving valuable resources.

Things are going to change as we move to more intelligent applications and “Go Beyond Search”.

Creating A Cost-Effective Google Adwords Search Engine Ad Campaign

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Pay-per-click ads like those available through Google Adwords can be a powerful, regular source of prospects for your products and services. However, whenever new clients have asked me to look at their Google Adwords campaigns, I begin to understand one element in Google’s growth to more than a $6 billion market value.

Many entrepreneurs fail to take advantage of Google’s mechanisms for making sure that their search engine ads get shown only to those who are logically potential buyers and that the ads encourage such people to click through. As a result, they pay much more than they have to for the exposure, get discouraged about the return on their investment and yet leave the ads running for lack of ideas about how to improve performance.

Don’t let it happen to you! Use these tips to keep your costs down and your rewards high.

1. Eliminate countries and languages that do not match what you offer. For instance, if you sell U.S. foreclosure listings, your ads should show only to Google users in the United States and probably only in English. On the other hand, if you have a translation service whose clients can live anywhere in the world, define the countries and languages your ad gets shown to much more widely.

2. Activate Google’s ad tracking. It costs you nothing, and enables you to keep an eye on not only your cost per click and click-through ratio, but also which keywords and which ads best lead to your desired result, whether that’s a sale, an inquiry for your services or a signup for your newsletter. That way, you can eliminate or try to improve elements that get a lot of clicks or cost a lot but do not get results.

3. Set up negative keywords. If your goal is selling something, why pay for tire kickers and freebie seekers? By defining “free” as a negative keyword (Google has a special button for this), you can keep many of them from clicking on your ads.

Equally important, think through alternate and unwanted meanings of your keywords and add negative keywords to prevent your ads from showing to wildly inappropriate visitors. For instance, type “cattle branding” into Google and you?ll see ads for business branding services. Those advertisers’ click-through rates will improve when they add “cattle” as a negative keyword.

4. Delete keywords and ads that are not working. Because Google’s system rewards a better click-through rate with higher ad placement and lower costs, you are paying Google more than necessary when you leave poorly performing elements running. Periodically clean out your losers.

5. Send people to a landing page that makes perfect sense. People click on search engine ads to learn more about whatever was featured in the ad. It seems logical that they?d look around from your home page for whatever interested them in the ad, but that’s wrong. Searchers are impatient. So if your search engine ad mentions a software demo, do not send them to your company’s home page. Send them to the exact page from which they can access the demo.

When you manage your Google Adwords campaigns according to these guidelines, you?ll be paying less to get a much more satisfying response.

Site Marketing– How To Get Search Engines To Notice Your Site

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

The first step in getting your site noticed is to have a site that is designed in a way that is search engine friendly. That is called SEO (search engine optimized). This is mostly a web designing issue. We will assume that you are starting with an SEO optimized site. But that alone won?t give your site high rankings.

To get the search engines to notice you, you need to understand them. The search engines? whole purpose is to find quality content– that is what the internet is all about. Information. And the more content (related to your site’s most important keywords) that you have, the more that search engines will like you. They like to see sites that grow with quality content at a steady rate. They also like to see a lot of quality links from other sites on the Internet going to your site.

This is where article marketing comes in. Let?s say you have a website that sells cameras. First you would want to expand your site beyond several pages. You could do that by adding lots of related products. Or you could review products. If you don’t want to do that yourself, look for free articles that review products for you. You could add other related free articles, such as how to use the product, where to display your photos, etc. Maybe start a blog on the topic. Blogs are great for promotion because they are constantly updated with fresh material.

Where do you get all this fresh material? From article directories and article list servers. Because of the rapidly growing need for people to find and submit articles, the number of article directories sites are increasing.

You can take advantage of this fact. You could write an article about you website?s subject (or take the material from what you have already written for your website). For example, how to find a quality camera or how to take great photos. Then you submit this article to article directories. I like to personally add my articles to a new directory every day. By doing this, you now have links all over the Internet leading to your site– links from the article directory, as well as links from everyone who publishes your article for free on their website, ezine or blog.

Article marketing is now considered the method of choice for web marketing. It is the best way to get top placement with the search engines and to drive traffic to your site.

It takes some time and effort to find and/or write and submit articles, but it is free. You can also pay a submission service to send your articles out to more directories than you would have time to do yourself. So, start thinking “content” if you want the search engines to notice you.
